Volunteers needed to share their stories
As the Western Pennsylvania affiliate for SAGE (Services & Advocacy for Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual & Transgender Elders), PERSAD CENTER is excited to participate in a new project designed to spotlight the lives of LGBT elders and their personal histories.
SAGE Story is a video storytelling project, taking place in select cities throughout the U.S., and PERSAD is leading the way to capture video stories of LGBT seniors from our region.
“We want to help seniors share their personal stories about living life as gay people, and the changes they’ve witnessed over the years. Did they face discrimination, did they come out of the closet over time? We want to give seniors the opportunity to become storytellers and share their experiences with future generations”, says PERSAD CENTER Senior Specialist, Kathi Boyle.
Health research has found that storytelling programs can reduce isolation and promote positive health and well-being in older adults. Increasingly, social change advocates and human service agencies are using digital storytelling to raise awareness about complex issues. “We hope the videos will also help caregivers and service providers gain a better understanding of older LGBT people and the lives they lead”, says Boyle. The completed videos will be posted to the SAGE and PERSAD CENTER websites upon completion.
PERSAD is seeking volunteer storytellers to participate in the project beginning this fall. If you or someone you know has a story to tell from the perspective of an older LGBT person, please contact Kathi Boyle at 1-888-873-7723, ext. 310, or by writing to: email@example.com.
