A tremendous display marks National Coming Out Day
The Delta Foundation of Pittsburgh hosted "Out for Equality" on National Coming Out Day in Market Square. More than 30 organizations created original doors for an art installation inspired by LGBT visibility and the importance of coming out of the closet.
PERSAD CENTER was pleased to take part in the event by creating a door displaying the words of legendary gay rights leader and activist Harvey Milk. Milk, the first openly gay person elected to politcal office in California, was a powerful voice for the importance of coming out of the closet. His inspirational words remain as compelling as when they were first spoken nearly 40 years ago:
“Every gay person must come out. As difficult as it is, you must tell your immediate family. You must tell your relatives. You must tell your friends, if indeed they are your friends. You must tell the people you work with. You must tell the people in the stores you shop in. Once they realize that we are indeed their children, that we are indeed everywhere, every myth, every lie, every innuendo will be destroyed once and for all. And once you do, you will feel so much better”.
As an organization that provides specialized counseling services for the LGBTQ community, PERSAD is there for people when they are ready to open the closet door and face the challenges of coming out. Even in 2013, Milk's words serve as an important reminder that by speaking the truth about who we are, we find peace and a sense of well-being.
Kudos to all of the organizations that particpated in this celebration of equality and to the Delta Foundation for making it happen.
