Affirming Care Isn't a Feature. It's Our Foundation.

Persad’s clinical approach wasn’t built in response to a trend or a policy requirement. It was built in 1972 by people who understood the mainstream mental health model was failing LGBTQ+ individuals, and who decided to do something different.

We Start With Identity

Mainstream mental health practice has historically treated LGBTQ+ identity as a variable to be managed, a complicating factor, or in the worst cases, a pathology to correct. The American Psychiatric Association didn’t remove homosexuality from its list of mental disorders until 1973. The effects of that framing, even where it has been formally rejected, have taken generations to work through.

Persad was founded in 1972 to reject that framing entirely. Our clinical approach begins with an unconditional position of affirmation. A person’s LGBTQ+ identity isn’t something to work around—it’s an integral part of who they are. Understanding their identity is essential to understanding the whole person. At Persad, our providers come prepared with the knowledge, cultural understanding, and clinical expertise to deliver affirming care from the start. Our clients can focus on their healing, not on explaining who they are.

Minority Stress Is Real and We Name It

Minority stress theory, developed by Dr. Ilan Meyer and widely supported by subsequent research, provides a framework for understanding why LGBTQ+ individuals experience elevated rates of anxiety, depression, and other mental health challenges. The framework identifies the chronic stress produced by stigma, discrimination, internalized homophobia, and the daily experience of navigating environments that aren’t fully safe as a primary driver of psychological distress.

Persad’s clinical team works with this framework explicitly. We don’t treat anxiety or depression as if they exist in a social vacuum. We account for the environments that produce and sustain them. This matters clinically because it changes what treatment looks like and what outcomes are realistic. It also matters relationally because it tells clients that their experience is understood, not minimized.

Whole-Person Care Under One Roof

Social determinants of health are the everyday conditions that shape a person’s quality of life, such as access to housing, food, healthcare, education, employment, transportation, and social support. When these basic needs are unmet, stress and uncertainty can have a significant impact on mental health, increasing the risk of anxiety, depression, trauma, and isolation. Addressing these factors is an important part of supporting overall emotional and physical well-being.

Mental health doesn’t exist separately from physical health—or from the other factors that shape a person’s well-being. Persad’s care model is designed to support the whole person, not just the issue that brings them through our doors. That’s why our services extend beyond therapy to include psychiatric care, substance use counseling, HIV support, older adult programming, fitness, and a client food pantry.

Navigating multiple and unconnected systems can keep people from the care they need.  Our clients are able to access multiple forms of support in one place.  “Care for the Whole You” is more than a tagline- it’s who we are.
