Community - Seniors

Did you know?
Over 3 million Americans over the age of 65 are thought to be lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender — and this number is expected to double by 2030.

The average senior in the US lives with one other person, while two-thirds of all LGBT seniors live alone.

About one-fourth of all people living with HIV/AIDS in the United States are age 50 and older.

Persad recognizes some of the unique challenges of LGBT and HIV+ seniors. Seniors in the community need social outlets and methods to stay connected. Seniors may be facing health challenges and often lack family support to help them. Seniors may have experienced significant losses of partners, jobs or capabilities and depending on how “out” they have been in their lives, may not be able to openly share those losses. Seniors may be preparing for end of life and need help managing the legal inequities in our society and make wealth and property transfer to loved ones more difficult.

Persad provides support and services to help older adults who are GLBT and/or HIV+ live full, healthy and independent lives.

We do this in two ways:

1.) By working with older adults and their families of choice to address the many challenges and opportunities GLBT and/or HIV+ people can encounter with age.

2.) By working with aging and human service providers to strengthen the community’s ability to provide competent, professional care to all seniors.
